Speak Up
Gateway Unified School District is committed to providing safe, welcoming, and supportive schools for all students. If you see, hear, or experience bullying, harassment, intimidation, discrimination, or another school safety concern, please speak up and tell a trusted adult or submit an online incident report.
Concerns can often be addressed by speaking directly with a teacher, counselor, or school administrator. Students, parents/guardians, staff, and community members may also use the link below to report a concern.
What Is Bullying?
Bullying may include severe or pervasive physical, verbal, written, or electronic conduct directed toward a student that causes, or can reasonably be expected to cause:
- Fear of harm to the student or the student's property;
- A substantially negative effect on the student's physical or mental health;
- Substantial interference with the student's academic performance; or
- Substantial interference with the student's ability to participate in or benefit from school services, activities, or opportunities.
Bullying may occur through a single severe act or through a pattern of behavior.
Bullying May Include:
- Hitting, tripping, shoving, or other physical aggression
- Threats, name-calling, slurs, insults, taunting, or intimidation
- Spreading harmful rumors or deliberately humiliating someone
- Repeatedly rejecting, excluding, or isolating someone
- Manipulating friendships or relationships to harm another student
- Sending or posting threatening, humiliating, or harmful messages, images, or videos
- Creating false profiles, impersonating another student, or using online content to harass or humiliate someone
Cyberbullying & Social Media
Bullying can occur through electronic communications and social media, including websites with free or easy registration, peer-to-peer messaging, online comment forums or sections, and image- or video-sharing platforms.
Students and families are encouraged to report cyberbullying that affects a student's safety or educational environment, including concerns involving conduct that may have occurred outside of school.
Harassment, Intimidation & Discrimination
GUSD prohibits discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, as provided by state and federal law, or association with a person or group with one or more of these characteristics.
Some complaints involving discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or bullying may be addressed through the District's Uniform Complaint Procedures (UCP).
Retaliation is prohibited against anyone who reports bullying, harassment, intimidation, or discrimination or who participates in an investigation or complaint process.
What Happens After a Report?
Information submitted through the Online Incident Report is sent to the appropriate school administrator for review and follow-up. The administrator will investigate the concern and take appropriate action based on the circumstances.
The District will protect confidentiality to the extent possible while appropriately investigating and responding to the concern. Please understand that student privacy laws generally prevent the District from sharing confidential information about another student, including specific disciplinary actions taken.
